Lee Dorsey

Happy birthday to Lee Dorsey, who was born December 24, 1924, in New Orleans. He served his country in WWII, once boxed under the name Kid Chocolate, ran an auto shop and had a great career as an R&B singer, working with the likes of Allen Toussaint and The Meters.

Dorsey had his first hit in 1961 with "Ya Ya," though his best known song is almost certainly "Working in a Coal Mine," an absolute banger that was covered brilliantly by Devo and included on the Heavy Metal soundtrack.

But Dorsey made his biggest dent in the pop culture zeitgeist with his 1969 hit "Everything I Do Gohn Be Funky," which earned him a namecheck the Beastie Boys' hit "Sure Shot" from their album Ill Communication.
